Welcome and Introductions

Hello. They call me Monk.

I don’t know gardening- never had much interest, plus I have to have a really good reason to dig around in the dirt, and for me – gardening isn’t a good enough reason. Since I work as a software developer, I am always on the lookout for a task I can automate as much as possible. I also love collecting data. Data is beautiful and should belong to everyone. But despite my lack of interest in dirt, and my need to try and automate as many things as I can, the idea of growing my own food is appealing. Enter Hydroponics. I knew next to nothing about hydroponics beyond “that’s growing food in water, right?” I have been reading books and googling all the information I can find, and this blog will be a record of my attempts as being a successful hydroponic grower/farmer. I will make every attempt to photograph and record everything that happens on this ride.

The tagline here is: “from zero to eat” – which means, I will literally be starting from absolute zero, acquiring seeds and the means to sprout them into seedlings, and then placing them in a hydro system, and hopefully growing them until they can be harvested and eaten. I have seen suggestions that you start with a seedling or a clone from another plant, but since I know absolutely nothing, I wanted to start from seeds to learn more about that part of the process. Eventually I hope to garner a regular portion of my table from my own hydroponic system.

Thanks for watching me on this journey. My hope is that someone else like me – who started with ZERO plant/gardening/hydroponic knowledge, can benefit from my mistakes and successes.

Thanks. Monk.
